How often do backflow preventer valves need to be replaced?

There isn’t a fixed replacement schedule. Replace a backflow preventer when it fails its annual test, leaks, won’t hold pressure, or shows corrosion or cracks. Many Peru and Wabash homes keep units in service for years with yearly testing and maintenance. A plumber will confirm if repairs (seals, springs) are viable or if full replacement is safer and more cost‑effective.

Quick checks:

  • Failed or overdue annual test
  • Visible leaks or corrosion
  • Stuck/slow check valves
  • Cracked body or freeze damage
